*ZOEY ANASTASIA PRICE Snap snap snap. Hazel eyes looked over at a girl snapping her gum and texting. She hated when girls snapped their gum. Her gaze lingered on the girl for a few seconds longer before turning to look out the window. The sky was a dull gray and since she had first woken up this morning it had been raining on and off. Zoey hated days like this. The reminded her of the day she had left her house, the day her life had changed forever. A change that she would take back if she could.
“zoey, are you with us” her teach mr. walker asked.
She heard the words and answered with ought letting her gaze linger from where she looked out onto the grounds of her public high school. “yea, mr. walker, I am” she replied. Did her voice sound as lifeless to everyone else as it did to her she wondered. Though she always wondered things like that. She hadn’t felt anything since she left home. She heard her math teach continue on with the lesson and sank back into her seat, letting the dull gray of the sky bring her memories forward. Though the memory of the day she left was always close by. She would never forget the way her father looked at her that day. She would never forget his eyes, full with despair, as he told her to get out of his house and never come back. Her mistake was actually listening to him.
She had felt like something was going to happen when she woke up that day. She didn’t know how to explain it, but something bad was about to happen. She had gotten ready like normal, taken a shower, done her makeup and headed downstairs. Her mother had been acting normal, had told her she loved her and sent her off to school. Her twin brother micah had gone to school with her but when she expressed her feeling he had just laughed it off and called her paranoid. During the day she simply agreed with him, thinking that yet again she had let her imagination get the best of her. She was often the type of person to let her wild imagination run loose. Sometimes that was a good thing, though most of the time it was bad. She had been sitting in science class when someone had come to knock on the door of her classroom. It was the only class that she and micah shared together. As if sensing her fear he had looked at her, never taken his eyes off her, though she barley noticed him. Her eyes were on the door, and the principal who had been talking to her teacher in very quiet whispers.
“zoey, micah… will you come with me please” she heard her principle monotone.
Thinking back on it, it was funny how the only thing she noticed about her principle was that he had been wearing a red tie. The walk down to the office she count barley remember. She had remembered micah grabbing her hand and pulling her along with him. She could remember his voice speaking the question she didn’t want answered. What had happened? He had asked. She remembered feeling like she hadn’t been there, but had been floating by. As if she was watching this as a third party. The principle had lead them into his office and told them to sit down, and like a robot she had sat down. Her eyes skimming past him to look out the window at the dull gray sky. He had explained slowly and with as much sensitivity as he could muster that their mother had passed on. That she was no longer in this life, that she had gone to the next, or wherever you went after death. She remembered him saying that their father was waiting out front for them and that they should go.
After that her memory was quite blank until they were home. She didn’t remember the car ride, or the crying. But when she thought back on it, she didn’t even know if she had cried. Her father had taken them to their aunts house. No one had talked, no one had even cried. They all just sat their, staring at the floor.
She didn’t know what had made her do it. She didn’t know what had possessed her at the time. But when she had found out it was not an accident, it was not even murder, that her mother had committed suicide she had blamed her father. Her and micah had found out he had been having an affair when they had skipped and come home early to find their dad there with another woman. She knew her mom had found out and that was why she killed herself. She remembered screaming at him, tears falling down her cheeks. “this is your fault, its all your fault” she had said. “I wish is were you dead, you and that whore you cheated on mom with” “I hate you” those were the last words she had ever spoken to her father. He had told her to leave, told her to never come back. She had known he didn’t mean it but she had left her aunts and gone to her cousins house. She had been living there ever since. She hadn’t found the courage to go to the funeral. She had switched school, and now, almost a year later, looking at the sky, hearing a bell ring distantly, she regretted everything.
“zoey? Zoey” she had felt someone shaking her and snapped out of the past to the present. Her friend Amanda was shaking her shoulder. She didn’t know how long it had been that she had been trying to get her attention, but from the annoyed look on her face, she guessed a few minutes had passed. They were the only two people still in class, other then their teacher. She shook her head slightly gathering her books from her desk and putting them in her bag. “sorry, sorry, I must have zoned out” she said giving a tiny shrug. She knew it pissed Amanda off when she did that but she honestly didn’t care much at that point. As they walked to their lockers she stayed quiet, trying to listen to the newest gossip Amanda had gotten during class, though she couldn’t manage it very well.
“zoey? Seriously your like a zombie, I mean did you hear me. Greg is totally like smitten with you”
Zoey looked up at her friend and rolled her eyes slightly. They were heading towards the buses. Zoey had a car but Amanda usually made her walk her to the bus before zoey could even leave. “yeah I heard you manda, I just… feel out of it today she said quietly. Realizing she had forgotten her sweater she swore under her breath “look you go on, ill see you tonight, I forgot my sweater at my locker” she said ignoring how Amanda said shed forget her head if it wasn’t screwed on. She hated to admit it, but she was right. She wasn’t the most organized person. That on top of her many time she zoned out made people think she was a little too weird at times.
She hadn’t noticed the guy in the hallway. Though that was normal for her, until something was right in front of her, she didn’t notice it. She had opened her locker grabbed her sweater and turned around. That was when she noticed him. He was standing not far from her now, he was pale, more pale then she had seen anyone before. Almost as if he was dead. He had on a long cloak and for some reason he gave her a feeling of belonging in her gut. She didn’t understand the feeling. But she also knew not to question it. She would never again question the feelings she got. She watched as he walked up to her, his long arm extending, before his finger touched her forehead.
“Night has chosen thee; thy death will be thy birth. Night call to thee; harken to her sweet voice. Your destiny awaits you at the house of night.”
Pain exploded near her eyes, the last thing she saw was his face, before everything went black.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Chaos, that’s the word she would use to describe what happened after she opened her eyes again. Thankfully no one had been in the hallway when she had been marked. That would have been even worse for her. Being marked wasn’t something that most people thought as a good thing to happen to you. Though zoey wasn’t normal either. Most people after being marked would be scared, and nervous and feel completely off balance. Though she did fear a bit of fear she most felt.. Relieved.
It was hard to explain where that feeling came from. Growing up zoey had felt uncertain about her life. While her family members all where outgoing, confident, daring. Zoey wasn’t. most of her childhood was spent curled up on the couch with a book. Or watching lord of the rings with her friends. Or playing her guitar, writing lyrics, keeping to herself. She didn’t feel like she belonged on her family, she didn’t feel like she belonged anywhere. But maybe that was because she wasn’t meant to belong in that world. Se wasn’t meant to belong in a world where the most important thing is who your dating or what to wear on a date. Ever since she turned seventeen she felt like she was missing something. She just hoped this was it.
When she opened her eyes, the first thing she realized was that she was alone. The guy she had saw before was gone. Her heard felt like it was exploding, and of course she knew why. Looking around she moved her hand up to rub her temple. She had heard that when you first got marked it was painful, she hadn’t believed them. But I guess seeing was believing, or in this case, feeling. Looking down the hall to make sure she was alone she quickly made her way to her car. She knew that if she went back to her cousins house she would freak. Her cousin Ashley had taken her in after her mothers death. She had been living there for almost a year now, they were close, but she supposed even family had its limits. Ashley wasn’t the type of person that would look past something like this . She honestly didn’t know of anyone who would look past this. Except maybe, micah. Ever since she walked out on her dad she hadn’t talked to micah. At first he had tried calling but eventually he had given up on that too. She didn’t blame him of course, who would. He had tried being a good brother to her, but she had turned her back on him, just like she did with anyone who was close to her. She didn’t realize it before but she did that a lot. Turned her back on people she knew loved her. When she was growing up it had never been that bad. She had a few close friends, but after her mother died she pushed everyone away. They tried calling, but she was too stubborn for that. She figured it was better then watching them die.
Everything was different now though. It a way this might be the only chance she would have to make up for shutting him out. One she got to her car she turned it on, heading in the direction of her house before she had the time to change her mind. She knew that there was a great chance her dad would be home, but at this moment, it was a chance that she had to take.
It didn’t take her long to get to her house. Her cousin lived close by her father, so the school she had transferred too was only about twenty minutes away. The drive was good for her, she had to think about what she would say, what she could do, to make it up to him. Maybe even to both of them if they were home. Pulling into the driveway she saw her fathers car. Her brother didn’t have one, at least not that she knew of. Getting out she slowly walked up to the door. Not sure if she should knock. Turns out she didn’t have to. She could hear voice coming towards the door so she back up a few spaces just as her dad and her brother came out. She didn’t catch much of the conversation except that they were going to get food. Though that changed when they saw her. No one said anything for a bit, though she watched their eyes. She came to realize quickly that if you catch a person by surprise you’ll see their emotions best in their eyes. She watched her dad first, he looked at her, not sure if he should smile or not. She saw his eyes land on her mark and shock take the place of happiness. And then there was micah, she saw the anger flashed in his eyes which was dimmed by hurt when she tried to give him a smile and then again by shock when he saw her mark.
“zoey… you.. Got marked” she heard her brothers voice.
She guessed it hadn’t really hit her until then. All of a sudden she felt the emotions she should have, fear. Uncertainty, loss,. “I… I didn’t know where else to go” she said trying very hard not to cry in front of them. She couldn’t cry in front of them. Especially not her dad. Not after everything that had gone down. “but.. You don’t want to see me… ill just” she didn’t get to finish that sentence because her father was hugging her. and soon micah had joined him. She didn’t think her dad would ever break the hug until she started coughing. Her headache had gotten worse as the time had past. She knew it was because she needed to get to the house of night. But now that she was here, now that she saw she could be forgiven, she didn’t know if she really wanted to go. She had just gotten her father back, and now she had to leave? How was that fair?
“zoey… sweetheart we have to get you to the house of night” she heard her dad say as he ushered her into the house walking over to the closet to grab a duffel bag she knew he would start filling with her old stuff. She ran her fingers shakily through her hair. “but I don’t know if I want to go..” she whispered. She felt Micah’s eyes on her and turned to look at him. “I want to stay” she whispered, but he was already shaking his head. “zo, you need to go, we can fix us later, let us just pack some stuff for you, sit down okay” he said and headed upstairs followed by his father to pack her stuff. She didn’t know how long she had sat there. Maybe fifteen minutes before they had come down, duffle bag and her guitar in their hands. Her dad ushered her out the door giving her not time to protest and put her in his car.
“we can talk more later sweetie, but you need to go, you know that right” he asked her.
Zoey looked at him and micah, who kept giving her concerned looks, swallowed and nodded. “I have to go… start a new life.. But that doesn’t mean I have to get rid of my old life, does is?” she asked them. She didn’t know if they had an answer to that question. Who really did have the answer to that question. She was going to the house of night, to complete a change into a vampire, and if she rejected the change she would die. If she changed she would outlive them and have to watch them die. She honestly didn’t know which way was better. She barley heard their words of comfort as they drove her towards the school. She nodded and replied when she had to, but actually listening was something she wasn’t very good at to begin with. It wasn’t until they got to the gate that she gave them her full attention.
“we love you zoey… I just wish I could have said that… before now… but its in the past” she heard her father say. She grabbed her things hugging them both and promising to call. Giving micah her car keys. She wouldn’t be need her car anyways. She glanced back at them once more before she turned towards the school and her new life.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Trying to explain the weeks that followed the night she had been marked was hard. It took a few days for thing to even begin to settle down enough for her to get her feelings on track. She didn’t know much about the change, but she knew that she was meant to be here. Not because her whole eighteen years of life had been spent feeling unwanted, misunderstood, but because she knew this was where she belonged. It was weird to think that she had only been here a few weeks and already felt like she had a new life, a new home, but that didn’t mean she could still have her old one. She got to keep her phone and even though her schedule had changed she was going to try and work out her relationships with her father and her brother. She knew it wasn’t going to be easy. Not after everything that had gone down between them. She needed to earn forgiveness from her brother, and she needed to fully forgive her father. But being at the house of night sort of helped with that to. She didn’t feel as out of control as she use to feel. She finally felt like she was controlling her life. The house of night helped her see that. Even if at the beginning it had been scary. She had been nervous, but being here, was better. It was better for her. And she knew that.

*PENDING hey there rose and thanks for applying! there's just a few things I found with your application that need to be fixed up before we can accept you. first off, I have no idea how old zoey is. that's kind of a problem xD secondly, I was hoping that you could elaborate more about her time being a fledgling, not just end the history up to that point. How did she feel coming up to the house of night and having her whole life changed around? The last thing that I noticed was that I didn't get a very good feel for her personality. This could just be me being picky, but I would like you to go into more detail about who zoey actually is. One way you could do that is by further exploring her relationships with people because I felt like her twin brother was just sort of thrown in there and their relationship was never really explained in detail.
Once you've finished editing your app, just bump this thread and one of the admins will check it over (:
