*JOSHUA DONOVAN DALE
BASICS fullname: joshua donovan dale nicknames: josh, dale, joshy, donovan, donny [hates latter three] gender: male age: nineteen dateofbirth: april twenty-third hometown: london, ontario sexualorientation: heterosexual species: mist fledgling position: sixth former
APPEARANCE height: six feet, two inches weight: one-hundred eighty-two pounds bodybuild: slender, tall, slightly muscular hair: joshua's hair is a natural jet black, and straight as a ruler. he's very particular about keeping it short, as well, and so he cuts it often. if messed up, he'll find any reflective surface and fix it, so it usually has a rugged neatness about it. his bangs are slightly into his eyes, but not by much; he still has his vision. it just covers his ears, and stays the same length in the back. eyes: they were once a very light, pale gray, but of course they're darker gray now. they're your average, almond shape, a little boring to be honest, but he thinks they're awesome. unlike most with a gray eye tone, there are no flecks of other colors in their depths, they're just a colorless shade. skintone: he never much liked the sun, even before being marked, so he's quite pale. he has no freckles on his skin, either. noticeablefeatures: now of course, if the fixed imperfections include scars, they're gone now, but his most prominent scar stretched across his right cheek, angling upward slightly. it is/was a major self-esteem issue since it is/was so noticeable, but he never applied anything to keep it hidden ("that's a girls thing"). he also had a scar across his left palm, one across his collarbone, and another on his stomach. as for features, he's got slightly thin lips, but they fit in well with his features, and he doesn't mind. he has a variety of tattoos, as well. mark: n/a piercings: ever a fan of rebellion, he got both his nose (right side) and the left side of his lip pierced to make a statement to his father. overallstyle: low maintenance, but neat and comfortable. this is generally what joshua goes for when choosing his attire for the day. coming from a very wealthy family, he's used to having money to buy what he likes, and so brand names are occasionally thrown into the mix; honestly, however, he'll wear just about anything ("if it looks sexy enough, and it's clean"). band shirts are common, usually paired with an average, well, pair... of jeans. when it comes to formality, he hates it, but he'll suck it up and wear 'something nice' if he has to. as for going out on a date? don't expect anything special. if you can't handle him daily, why should he dress up for you? oh, and he doesn't really accessorize, maybe a belt or tie on occasion, but that's it.
PERSONALITY likes: - women. well, he is your average guy in some aspects, and he likes the appeal of a hot girl as much as your next male. now, he does have limits, but he's usually an overall shallow dude in this sense.
- music. all those band shirts had to come from somewhere. there's little joshua loves more than rocking out to a favorite band, especially at a show. he's open to a lot of things, but there are a few he can't stand.
- mist vampyres, of course. being marked as one, he quickly took a liking to them, and that was that. he likes his fellow fledglings, as well, they're cool.
- cats. oh, yes. they might hate him, but he loves the little creatures. he grew up around cats, and so it kind of miffed him a little when they started to hate him after he was marked. and if anyone tries to hurt a cat, he gets a little pissed. ("hey, what gives? i don't hurt them, do i?")
- snakes. well, much as he loved his kitties, he's grown used to the sly, marvelous power of the reptilian creatures that mist fledglings associate with.
- sugar. you can't have joshua without his sugar fix. if you try to touch his stash, he'll go off on you. ("i can't live without candy! back off, it's mine!") childish as it is, you're unlikely to change his tune. now of course, he can't have it that often, nor very much at all now... but that makes him all the more protective of that little bit he has.
- the night. he's never been too fond of day, always preferring to hang around outside after hours. were it not for school, he claims he would have been nocturnal even before marking. ("what? it's true!")
- himself. oh, yes. joshua has always been rather vain, and thus holds himself in very high regards. hand in hand with this, he's very fond of praise, and being told that he's attractive. ("i mean, i know i'm great and all, but it's nice to hear it out loud every once and a while.")
- competition. as long as he can win. a bit of a sore loser, he still likes the adrenaline rush he gets from pitting his skills against that of another. he'll smart for a few days after a specific loss, but he'll get over it eventually. ("i demand a rematch. now.")
- reading. he's a real nerd when it comes to knowledge and literature. you'd hardly guess it to look at him, but joshua's obsessed with books, and he's likely got a new one on hand every time you see him. (realistically of course; it takes him a day or two to read most, so if you're around him a lot...)
dislikes: - money. coming from someone rich, it isn't what you'd expect. sure, it makes the world go 'round, and sure, he takes advantage of having it, but he hates the lifestyle. so he tends to pretend he came from a perfectly average family, having a perfectly average life. ("it's easier that way").
- rap, hip hop, and yes, country. these three genres are absolute 'nos' for him. he also hates most of the mainstream, but that's a mixture of genres, and it doesn't really count.
- a lot of vampyres. it runs with the territory, but there are a few exceptions. if you pretend to be an activist of something for years, it kind of grows on you, right?
- religion. he hated it before he was marked, and the loathing only became worse after he became a mist fledgling. he thinks that it's stupid, false, pointless, and a number of other words that would rile up your average, god-fearing Christian
- his father. he was never treated well in his home, despite having all the money he could ask for. money cannot, indeed, buy happiness, and josh learned that the hard way. plus, his father put him through a lot with that stupid school, and he'll never forgive him for it.
- weakness. he doesn't like feeling insignificant, or weakened. any flaws which he has can be beaten out of his system, in his own opinion, so he'll mentally attack himself and do anything he can to get over them. the fear of water and needles, however? ("no way. i'm not putting one toe in - get that thing away from me!") yeah, those aren't going anywhere.
- the sun. this hardly has to be explained, but he's always hated it. he'll tell this to anyone who asks, too. he's proud of it for some strange reason. ("hell, maybe i was made for this or something, you know?")
- rules. he's never done well with restrictions and guidelines, and it seems like he's hardwired to break them. there are a few he knows he has to abide by, like the diet ("i'm not too fond of dying, thanks.") but simple ones... he doesn't care for them.
- snow, and cold. while joshua doesn't like the sun, he does like wamrth, though he prefers to just sit near a fire or something to get it. he can't stand snow. living in canada previously though... ("oklahoma's got nothing on six feet of snow. i can deal with this.")
- stereotypes. the worst stemming from black hair paired with the occasional band shirts. ("what the hell is a scene kid, anyways? shut up and let me read my book, damn it.")
strengths: - he's a charmer, and thus a great liar. he tends to get along with people well, but only if it suits him. in reality, he hates most people in general. his chameleon personality makes him believable, and he takes this to his advantage, using deception to get his way.
- he's unaffected by a lot of prejudice and stereotypes. if you insult him, he'll more than likely laugh it off. however, there are a few weak spots, and if someone can find one, it's actually easy to take down his stiff wall of emotionless attitude.
- joshua is quite intelligent. since he doesn't have many friends, books were constant companions in youth, and so he's quite well-read.
weaknesses: - he's shallow in more ways than one, and doesn't make real friends with any ease at all. given that he doesn't let anyone close, he also gets very attached to his real friends, and so losing them would shatter him quite deeply; who knows what he'd do? (note: he's not openly clingy, just internally)
- joshua is terrified, and i mean terrified of two certain things. needles, and deep water. he will not step foot in anything which he thinks he can drown in; which is a wide variety, seeing as he can't swim. and he'll do anything to keep needles of all sorts away from him. he doesn't even trust himself holding one. the reason these are weaknesses? they're incredibly detrimental when he's faced with them, and he can become rather childish in his desperation to avoid them.
- he can't control his anger. even around friends - and this is how he loses a lot of them quickly - he has a short fuse and a long list of things he can find wrong with someone, and once you've ticked him off, he'll let it all out. he gets violent when angry, as well. after the period of anger, he feels exhausted and depressed, and will more than likely lock himself in a room for hours to make sure he doesn't have to talk to anyone else.
fears: - deep water. now, while he hated most Christians just for their religion, there was a particularly warped man when he was but seven years old that taught him the true hatred. he insisted that joshua was 'possessed' by demons, and demanded a rough exorcism which included holding his head under the water for long periods of time. he nearly drowned during this experience, and has been terrified of deep water (and flabby-skinned, balding priests...) ever since.
- needles. this is one of the things he was just born with. he swears he can feel everything from the moment the needle punctures the skin, and it makes him feel sick to his stomach just talking about it. hand in hand with this, he loathes hospitals, but he can at least stand to be in one if it isn't for him (though he still feels incredibly nervous and paranoid).
dreams: - become a mist vampyre. it's either that or death, but he'd be aspiring to it, either way. he hates the idea of his body rejecting the change, and so he even gave up (most of) his sugar habit for it!
- find a real friend. cheesy as it is, he's never found one of those people that would really stick with him through thick or thin, and he sort of longs for it.
hobbies: - guitar playing. self-taught as he is, he loves it quite a lot. he can be a little self-conscious about playing in front of people, but he does like to show it off, and so he'll accept if someone asks him to play for them.
- reading. he's a bookworm, enough said. his favorite genres are horror, true crime, and those little gems you can find amongst little-known authors. he hates romance with a burning passion... no pun intended.
- sketching. he likes to pull out the old sketchbook every now and then and play around with his drawings. he's pretty good at it, but he's never been good at painting. if he does something with color, it's usually with pencil crayon, or something resembling a pencil. no pastels, or anything.
habits: - when bored, he'll drum his fingers on any available surface. this annoys a lot of people; however, he doesn't give a damn, so he'll do it anyways.
- daydreaming. if he finds the conversation boring, he'll go somewhere else in his mind. he tends to look like he's paying attention, but if you ask for his opinion... busted.
- examining his hands. a rather odd habit, he's often found tracing the creases in his palm, or flexing his fist so that the veins in his knuckles stand out.
- swearing, but only when he's angry. when normal, it'll probably only be the occasional curse word thrown into the mix.
- fixing his hair/fiddling with his shirt/'perfecting' his appearance. as long as he thinks he looks good, it's okay. if not, it drives him mental. but his constant hair-fiddling drives everyone else mental.
HISTORY mother: patricia lillian dale, fifty-six, unknown father: donovan patrick dale, fifty-eight, brain surgeon siblings: melissa sophia dale, 25, journalist othersignificantfamily: patrick samuel dale, eight-six, grandfather, retired bestmemory: his best memory was, of course, the marking. he saw that as his ticket to freedom. worstmemory: probably the so-called 'exorcism', that scared the crap out of him. overallhistory: his mother had come from a rather poor family, and so had jumped at the chance to marry a rich doctor. she never loved him, but did love joshua's older sister, melissa, and so she stayed with him for a full six years. however, upon the birth of their second child, the young woman decided she'd had enough, and she took off and left very soon after he was born. this in mind, joshua knows nothing of his mother but the jumbled information he's recieved from his sibling and father.
his father blamed him for the loss of his wife, whom he loved even though she'd never felt the same way about him. and of course, melissa blamed him as well. given this mutual hatred of the family's third wheel, he didn't grow up with the normal love and affection of a family. even as a toddler, he was very bitter and moody. donovan was an extremist Christian, and he went to the priest when joshua was only seven years old. this sparked the 'need for an exorcism', and thus his fear of water was born. they waited two years, until he was nine years old, and then decided that his attitude had not improved. (and why would it? he wasn't possessed, merely unhappy). donovan gathered up the required funds and sent joshua to a private Christian school that claimed to 'cure misbehaved children and teens with the power of the lord'.
he hated it immensely. though he had nothing against religion at first, merely those that tried to drag him into their own, he quickly developed a hate for it. however, he did notice that they all shared a hate; vampyres. and so, with a natural need for rebellion, joshua became their extremist supporter, despite the claims that they were demons, and whatnot, from those surrounding him. the school put up with it for an astounding six years before they finally kicked him out. his father, enraged, got them into a car accident on the drive home, which is where the scars are/were from. however, they both survived the ordeal, and moved to oklahoma afterward. they had family down there, and donovan decided that joshua was not going back to any sort of school, and that he obviously needed a close eye to be kept on him.
he hated this perhaps more than the schooling, and so got a number of tattoos and a few piercings to show off his rebellious side. he didn't have to put up with it too long, however, because it was then that he was marked. he was, and will forever be grateful that he was chosen, and he likes the house of night a hell of a lot better than he liked staying at home. (even if it does mean giving up sugar. sigh.)
